It is with sadness I advise you that Ray Lowther died on 30 January 2011.
Ray, as many of you will be aware served as a local Councillor on behalf of the Labour Group for more than half a century. First as A District Councillor (Chertsey Urban District Council) subsequently as a Runnymede Borough Councillor (when the District Council’s combined) and then as the preferred choice for the Chertsey District at County Hall as our County Councillor.
Ray stood in a considerable number of elections as was always the peoples first choice never being beaten to represent the people of Chertsey, becoming known as Mr Chertsey. He served on many local organisations supporting local groups and events in all manner of commitments and responsibilities.
He died peacefully at home sometime yesterday afternoon and his family have requested time to privately grieve and therefore not to be contacted at this time, although I am confident would appreciate letters and cards at this difficult time.
I have known Ray since my childhood and although sometimes (as I became more involved) I could be challenged by his views I always considered him with the greatest respect and one of my valued counsellors and mentor.
He will be missed but never forgotten.
Paul Greenwood, Runnymede & Weybridge CLP Secretary.
