We were all shocked and saddened by the news of the sudden death in January 2004 of our colleague Jim Marshall – MP for Leicester South.
In the General Election of February 1974 Jim unsuccessfully contested the then Tory held seat of Leicester South, but won it in the second election that year, in October, by over 1000 votes.
But Jim was very hardworking constituency MP and turned the former marginal seat into a much safer one – his majority at the last election being over 13,000.
After 1992, Jim devoted much of his energies to the Council of Europe and, more particularly, to the Assembly of the Western European Union. He was at various times Chair of the Defence Committee and, later, the Political Committee and was President of the Socialist Group. His loss to the delegation is immense.
