It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of Brother Andy Dodds on the 4th January 2004 at the age of 77.
Following two years as a Miner, Brother Dodds became an Engine Cleaner at Muirkirk in 1943 and joined the NUR. He qualified as a Passed Fireman (Relief Driver) in 1949, and at that time was the youngest Passed Fireman in Scotland.
He held many Branch positions, including Secretary of Muirkirk Branch from 1949 to 1954, Chairman of Hurlford Branch from 1955 to 1960 and Secretary of Harrow & Wealdstone Branch. He was a Delegate and E.C. member to the Glasgow & West of Scotland District Council.
Brother Dodds was appointed to the Staff at the Union’s Head Office in 1960 and worked in the Finance Department. He served on the Staff Committee and as Staff Chairman.
In 1966 he was elected Divisional Officer and served first as the Road Transport Organiser and from 1967, the Divisional Officer for the South East Division until appointed Headquarters Officer in 1974. He was elected Assistant General Secretary in 1981 and appointed Senior Assistant General Secretary from 1987 until his retirement in 1991.
He was an active Labour Party Member and was elected to the N.E.C. of the Labour Party in 1987, 88, 89 and 90.
Other positions Brother Dodds held were Deputy Director, Unity Trust plc, Member of the National Docks Labour Board from 1986 to 1990, Director BR Pension Trustees Co. Chairman of BR Pensions Management Fund Committee, 15 years as a member of the Industrial Tribunal Panel, 3 years as a member of the Training Board Levy Appeals Panel and 3 years as a member of the Catering Industry Training Board.
