I’m delighted to welcome former Deputy Leader of Sandwell Conservatves, Councillor Elaine Costigan to the Labour Party. Elaine says that “Michael Gove made me ashamed to be a Conservative”.
Elaine is a powerful voice for Wednesbury and Sandwell. She’s passionately cares about the future of Sandwell’s children and was rightly appalled by the Coalition government’s callous cuts to Sandwell’s schools. I’m delighted she’s joining Labour and look forward to further discussions with other councillors.
Up and down the country, people are realising that they were hoodwinked by David Cameron and Nick Clegg during the General Election. Whoever wins the Labour leadership election will have to build alliances with members of the other parties who feel betrayed by their political leaders.

Are people falling out of love with the Conservatves or just MP in general
Her comments are welcome, it’s right for Labour to give them publicity and offer her support BUT in the election she stood against a Labour candidate selected by local Labour members who had stood by Labour through all the bad times and done the work during the elections. If she’s saying she stood for the wrong party then she should stand down, go through a selection process and if selected stand for the council as a Labour candidate. As it is, her Constituency Party members have been completely ignored.
Labour has lost half it’s membership over the last 10 years or so.
Just saying,
Pete
What I want to know is why is a schools rebuilding programme necessary and some schools in such a poor state after 13 years of Labour Government and unprecedented public spending, and in Labour controlled local authorities in particular? Is it also not very silly to criticise the Coalition for being forced to make cuts because of Labour’s failed economic policy?
You must think we are all too stupid to point the finger at the REAL people to blame.
I’m sure it is how you described, but from the photo, it looks more like a kidnapping than a defection.
“Top Tory”?
I’m sure Mr Cameron was kept awake all night, tormented by this devastating blow to the party.
Let’s get a grip on language, shall we?
“Top” as in deputy leader of a small council? What would that make the next leader of the Labour Party?
Superdupertoppest?
