		<description>The Independent article you link to talks about &#039;grade 7 and above&#039;.  So that&#039;s all the senior civil service and a lot more besides.  According to the latest figures I can find, there were 4,460 members of the senior civil service on 31 March 2008 and 29,480 in grades 6 and 7, which is consistent with the 35,000 total.</description>

If you look in old editions of Whittaker&#039;s Almanac (probably other publications too) under each dept the names and salaries of the Perm. Sec. and other seniors were listed with their salaries.

Salary ranges for the various lower grades were also listed.

(Of course Civil Service pay was much simpler and more standardised in those days.)
