Just ordered the Nick Davies book, Flat Earth News. The subheading describes the book as “An Award-winning Reporter Exposes Falsehood, Distortion and Propaganda in the Global Media.” I think it might be an interesting weekend read.

It’s an excellent book, but quite depressing to see laid bare just how terrible much of our media is.
Flat Earth News is a good read, but in the end feels a tad empty and pointless: journalists in quite often lazy scandal!
Who knew?
I’m not sure Davies actually says journalists are lazy – almost the opposite, that they are under so much pressure to churn out material quickly that they just don’t have time to do a better job.
It’s a good book, but there’s a tendency for people to read it and assume that every journalist spends every hour just re-writing press releases or stories from other sources, which is not the case.
It also warns that the increasing importance of the internet as a method of distributing news has made the problem worse.
