Maybe 30% of the Tories still think the NHS was a communist plot and given the chance they would get rid of it. Churchill promised to fight the legislation clause by clause line by line. Secretly they believe that we would be better off with a private health insurance system like they have in most of the USA which provides only for the very rich.

I have happily paid into the NHS for 35 years and taken nothng out. I hoped it would remain that way. At 52 I was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes. I was starting to see triple. The doctor told me that In about 2 years I would be blind unless they operated . 6 months later both eyes fitted with new lenses I can see almost perfectly. The two operations were done on day hi-tech surgery lasting about 30 minutes. Each visit finished off with a cup of tea and a bourbon biscuit. No fuss and no money wasted on gimmicks. Old Skool world class NHS treatment. Clem Atlleee and Aneurin Bevan would have been proud. Total cost to me... zero.

I e-mailed my friend Ray a retired lawyer from New Orleans who made millions in oil and told him about my close with blindness. I asked him how much such an operation would cost in the USA.

" $60,000, Paul"

"What! 60 grand for two small day operations!"

" No. $60,000 per eye. They would have insisted on keeping you in for several days to rack up the charges."

"What about insurance?"

" Paul. Even I no longer have the kind of money for a policy that would cover such an eventuality"

" OK Ray and if I couldn't afford it?"

" 20 bucks for a white stick"

Long live the NHS.

Still trying to figure this one out, Tom, but I suppose there is a meanining in there!

Add the life of Beatrix Potter to your reading list and then persuade yourself that a posthumous honour from this greatful Nation should not be forwarded by our Government to her memory on our behalf.
