A revealing story in today’ News of the World – Gone-servative Party – appears to show that David Cameron’s honeymoon is over.
Mr Cameron has lost over 40,000 members of the Conservative Party since becoming leader. There is a long term decline in membership of all political parties but even taking this into account, to lose tens of thousands of members whilst projecting yourself as the “heir to Blair” is bound to attract comparision. When Labour were challenging the Conservatives in the mid-nineties, membership went up by more than 100,000.
People make up their own minds about why there has been such a steep fall in membership. I think it shows that grass roots support for “project Cameron” is illusory. And if you can’t change and inspire your own party, what chance have you got of changing the Country?

Didn’t a read this story about three months ago in the Mirror and the Observer?
Think the Screws have just rehashed it. But does show how the Tories are struggling.
Any news on the collapsing Labour Party membership…
I am a new Councillor (2 years). I took a seat that had been Labour for 49 years. It was a surprise but I orked hard for it. Since being a Councillor I have had little support or acknowledgement from colleagues in nearby Wards. We have only 9 Conservative Councillors in all.
The old brigade keep themselves small to protect their positions. New interested potential members are put off, especially young & educated people and new Ward Branches are not encouraged and one active Branch has been closed which is putting their members in a position not to renew their Party Membership.
Please, please could someone high up in the Party or on the Board help us to reform our Ward Branch and keep our members.
