Fascinating ‘talking point’ story today. Former Conservative leader, Iain Duncan Smith wants British couples to sign pre-nuptial agreements. This is one of those issues where my age - or eight years of marriage - is prohibiting me from seeing the upside to the argument. I am genuinely interested in your views on this. Could they work in the UK?

Hmm, ‘marriage preparation classes’ before tying the knot. Isn’t that what they in that hotbed of liberal democracy known as Iran. Very comforting to know where the Tories are getting their ideas from these days. Surely not a case of ‘we will defend your individual rights and freedoms as long as you do what we want’. I believe that’s called hypocrisy.
As an aside - love the Larkin poem!
How can you not see the upside? It will mean that couples can draw up contracts that suit them rather than being obnliged to sign one decreed by the state.
It will mean that a woman, or man, who works immensely hard to build up a business, or create a level of financial security, need not lose it if their partner mistreats them, commits adultery or otherwise badly lets them down, or simply dumps them for no good reason.
Pre-nups are no more than personalised marriage contracts. And why should we not personalise them? Why do politicians feel they, rather than we, should decide the terms of our romantic relationships as well as everything else in our lives?
