Being Andrew Gilligan by Hack

Hack has produced a very amusing image relating to a furious row relating to Evening Standard journalist Andrew Gilligan’s Internet behaviour.

As Nathan Torkington said in his brilliant presentation, there are invisible traces and unimaginable data trails left when we engage in the digital realm. Sockpuppets are the least of them.

Hi Tom, just calling in to wish you a Merry Winterval once again. Aren’t sockpuppets just the worse thing you have ever met? Can’t stand them myself, they are the dark side of the internet and they should be wiped off the planet. Just like the BNP have been … er … will be, when someone gets round to it.

Martin/Pogsurf/Lobster-Blogster/Tory-Dipper/Etc.:

When sock-puppeteers like yourself seek to get involved in a by-election while keeping very quiet about their political affiliations, it does get pretty serious. Ditto for some anonymous edits to Wikipedia.

Nevertheless, the article makes for interesting discussions on the whole anonymity issue of online teaching and learning, and I’m looking forward to hearing my students’ responses to this.
