Serious change

On this particular occasion, I admire the arrogance and ambition of Francis Irving’s campaign to save the planet.

Well, kind of the point is that I’m not trying to save the planet. We’ll have enough to do to save our economy, civilisation and way of life…

Yes, I wrote the post in a hurry. The tone is harsher than it was meant to be. I should really have said “practical approach to reforming the economic system to account for the essential low carbon lives we’re all going to have to lead”. Or something like that. Hope you’re well.

I think its an ego trip, and yes, an arrogant one. Begone denialists and crusties? So we can have more cool new stuff? Is HE serious? Fine, everything needs to be turned upside down to get sustainable, and there’s lots of glorious techno opportunity in that. But claiming that we can all carry on consuming as we are now is mad, even with unlimited free fusion powered electricity. Doing what we do now with more green energy source and incremental efficiency gains is not serious enough by a long shot. Real efficiency needs root and branch redesign, including a reassessment of the true costs of the goods we seek. Mock me as a crusty if you like, Francis, but a lot of those costs should be making us rebalance our cost-benefit equations. A lot more serious change than shiny new gadgets is necessary to win this fight.
