Paul Waugh: Andrew Mitchell MP claims downturn is an “incredibly good” moment for the Tories

Did I read this right? Conservative front bencher and close friend of David Cameron, Andrew Mitchell, says that the economic downturn is “an incredibly good moment” for the Tories.

If he did say that – and the full interview is not published until tomorrow, then Mr Mitchell will be exposing a cynicism that will shock most people in Westminster and beyond.

Well, Mitchell’s arguing that this quote was taken out of context, and looking at the whole thing I daresay he has a point – still clumsy, though.

What’s much more striking is David Cameron’s statement (admittedly a few years old) that in opposition “part of you actually starts wanting things to get worse” and that he could “hardly wait to switch on the Today programme every morning in order to listen to all the bad news”.

Delightful.

I interviewed Cameron today – he says (perhaps unsurprisngly) that Mitchell’s comments have been misrepresented.
