Geek links

This blog is going in two directions at the same time [insert your political gag attached to this statement in the comments section if you must]. On the one hand there is the knock about political stuff. On the other, there are posts about my increasing interest in social media and web 2.0.

I was struck by something Bob Piper said over the summer. He cracked a gag about me putting all that boring Internet stuff on the site. From his point of view he’s right of course. Most party activists and elected representatives want to use the tools of communication. They’re not interested in conversation about the tools.

Political parties used to have two sorts of member. Those that knew how to warm up an ancient two colour offset litho printing press and those that relied on the people who could. Today things are different. Parties are now divided into those that know how to set up a group email list and those that aren’t going to be around much longer.

This still doesn’t get me through the problem of talking to two (admittedly small) audiences on the same page. Basically, I’m going to have to reintroduce categories.

Until then, sorry Bob, but here are some really interesting or corny geek links:

Browser lore: History of the browser user agent string h/t Laura
Computer closeness: Brave new world of digital intamacy in the New York Times

Did I really say that, Tom? Must have been bevvied because I quite like the geeky stuff, it’s more sound than your politics!

We must get that curry because I need your help with something in Sandwell.

Hi Tom! As you know I am from the pre-computer age but try to keep up to date. I haven’t understood much of the geeky stuff, I go for the politics. However, today, I have been advised to “install a browser” so that I can do more genealogy research. What should I do – ? Thanks

Tom – I like the geeky stuff, especially in a Minister. I find the partisan stuff a bit weird, but then I accept it’s integral to your life and work.

What comes across is that you love technology, and you dislike (not to use a stronger word) anything that can be labelled Tory.

It’s much more engaging to me to see you – or anyone – guided by the things you like in life than by the things you dislike.

But I suffer from exactly the same when I get frustrated by self-serving introspective bureaucracy …
