Er, I think you mean "the first black female MP to become a minister in history" don't you Tom. I know you are unlikely to see eye-to-eye with Diane Abbott on political issues, but go easy on the airbrushing of history, eh?

I was campaigning in the 2005 General Election and Diane came on a visit to drum up support. We were busy handing out leaflets on a busy high street when a couple of people came rushing up saying they couldn't stop, they were on their way to work but they had seen her from the bus and had to get off and come back and say hello (and thanks, I think). They hurried back off to get the next bus, avowing strong support for Diane and the candidate for whom she was campaigning that day - Dawn Butler.

Shabana Mahmood was selected for Birmingham Ladywood.
A seat as safe as they come. Does that not count Caroline?

It is indeed a great achievement, and is a significant step away from the treacherous move by Blair to de-select Ms Abbott for some white guy....

On the off chance you've not seen it Tom, Labourhome.org is linking to a story this morning of a letter from a country-wide group of Labour council leaders in support of the PM's priorities.

http://www.labourhome.org/story/2008/9/17/54358/2519

Guess we can only hope this helps puts the breaks on some of the nonsense going around the PLP at the moment.

Bolton South East, a very safe Labour seat, has selected Yasmin Qureshi as the PPC to stand after Brian Iddon's retirement. She's female and Asian - does that not count, Caroline?

this treachery thing...seems to me it's easy to get it ass backwards. the labour movement isn't about leaders, it's about people. dawn butler, heiress to many significant struggles for recognition of rights, sure has her work cut out...when there are life- long labour voters talking of gnawing their arms off at the elbow rather than vote labour again, maybe it's high time to ask who and what was betrayed?

capitalism in meltdown, and the merchant bankers would still have us making thousands of miles of chains, from childhood to death, from dawn until the fading of the light, if we were foolish enough to let them...

Big up to Dawn!

As for you, my dear Mr Watson, it seems the chickens are finally coming home to roost.

Isn't it terrible all these people trying to destabilise our Prime Minister? So glad that Tom would never do such a treacherous thing.
