Steve Dyson – blogging editor

I have been tracking the debate on the future of the three Trinity Mirror titles in Birmingham with interest.

Steve Dyson, editor of the Birmingham Mail says that plans to merge some of the functions of the Birmingham Post, Birmingham Mail and Sunday Mercury are a reflection of the digital age we are in. To Steve, the headline should be ‘Birmingham Mail and sister papers reinvent themselves for multi-media revolution’.

To the more cynical, the headline should be “I’ve a multi-media wobbly camera phone publishing dream and its going to be in the middle of nowhere cos it is cheap”

Steve Dyson with characteristic honesty, blogs about the difficult changes facing the papers and allows a number of demoralised journalists to vent their spleen in the comments section. The comments are raw and angry and pained and brutal, and therefore compulsive reading.

Loving (!) Dyson calling Hastilow a ‘raging Tory’ (for anyone who doesn’t know) and following up with ‘For his sake, I certainly hope I don’t bump into him in the very near future’.

Also, it looks like an unedited discussion, but my criticism of Labour-supporting journos on the Mail’s payroll didn’t seem to make it past the filters.

Steven Dyson is not honorable. The blog is a sham. And what little respect he has is evaporating fast. In fact, with every reply he posts, his arrogance and insensitivty to those who will be without a job is truly astonishing. The guy doesn’t give a damn. Not really. There he is telling us about how excited he is about his new mobile phone. This on the very blog where people are openly terrified about their future job prospects. And then he tells the ‘cynics’ that he knows who they are because their email addresses go to his inbox. I’m truly appalled.

Dysons apparent attacks those who may make up the 65 job losses seems a bit off.

Maybe it was the time for brutal honesty. I don’t like the way it was done, but, let’s be honest, among us there are a few lazy arses, and a few more who are, simply, pretty crap. Do we want to carry on carrying them??
