Yesterday, David Cameron’s favourite think tank claimed that Birmingham was not “yet strong enough to be the London of the region”.
The Conservative pointy heads claimed that:
“Requiring an expanding Wandsworth, Woking or Witney to offer significant levels of social housing for people from Walsall, Warrington and Wigan will not be popular, and it will not happen unless local councils are required to do so.”
Yup that’s right, if you live in Walsall, your only option is to move to another place in the South beginning with a “W”.
The story has developed as it now appears that the Tories don’t actually know where Birmingham, West Midlands is.
Today it also emerges that Birmingham City council have a slightly different ambition. They don’t want the poor of the City to move to Wandworth. Why do that when you can have the beautiful recylcling schemes of Birmingham, Alabama.
The Daily Mail reveals Conservative led Birmingham Council has recently printed 720,000 copies of a leaflet adorned with a photograph of Birmingham, Alabama. I do hope that Lord Ashcroft will be making his jet available for their conference again this year.
And you would have thought that West Midlands Conservatives would learn from past mistakes.

[...] of the wrong Birmingham (the one in Yankland) on 720,000 leaflets. Good skills, eh? Bob Piper and Tom Watson are predictably scathing but we at Labour Outlook feel that they’re being too harsh. [...]
The answer is NO! Furthermore, I have reported you to our beloved Elected Mayor who will give you short shrift for downgrading his ambitions.
