Imagine what it would have been like when as a child you had access to the Encylopedia of Life. This new initiative seeks to catalogue a million of the 1.8 million species on the planet. It’s a great initiative, one that will take years to assemble but will be fascinating to see grow.
I suspect it will kick off a growing amatuer recreation of species discovery. Being noted across the Internet as the first to discover a new species will bring great kudos. Book your geek holiday to the Amazon soon.
As Kevin Kelly says though, the ultimate goal should be a web page for every species on the planet. Still, great credit must go to the founders of the Encylopedia of Life.
