Here comes Clay Shirky – free books available here

Have you read “Here comes everybody” by Clay Shirky yet? It’s a lucid analysis of how social networks and the internet are changing our lives.

I’m so excited about this book that I’ve invited Clay to see me today. Can’t wait.

In fact, I’m so keen to get this book into the hands of people who want to make a difference, I’m offering three free copies to readers of this blog. Just let me know in the comments section below. I’ll draw names on Friday.

Well Tom you seem to have embraced your new job with characteristic verve and enthusiasm. However, I have to wonder what kind of person would be tempted to plough through a lucid analysis of how social networks and the internet are changing our lives when like me they could be reading D H Lawrence’s ‘The Rainbow’ instead. It’s a modernist masterpeice -vibrant, sensual and crackling with life.

P.S. Please enter me in the draw

Clay Shirky was on Andrew Marr’s “Start the Week” programme on Radio Four this week. You can “listen again” or download the programme from the website (sorry I’m auditioning to be a continuity announcer).

He’s on about 10 minutes from the end but argues rather too much from the particular to the general imho. I liked Andrew’s counter that large organisations were merely being “cyber heckled” rather than seriously challenged by the internet…

Someone made the good point about the restricted nature of people who participate heavily in the interactive features of the net. It’s hard not to believe that my life is very different to how it would have been had the internet not existed. But Clay implies that this might be because I haven’t got enough to do with my time! A hazard of early-semi-retirement coupled with a dislike of decorating perhaps.

This book might help us poor peasants up here in West Brom East. Please enter me in the draw or would that be seen as favouritism?

It’s £9 (cover price £20) on Amazon if you miss out in Tom’s draw.
Lawrence’s people I find rather two-dimensional and overwhelmed by life; once had a girlfriend who read too much of him.
Sir Peter Gershon was on R4 Today this morning, so I Googled him and turned up his presentation to the May 2006 Welsh Audit Office Conference. By comparison with the entirely reasonable expectations of govt efficiency and use of our money (which I read into your recent speech, Tom), his proposition is pathetic, because he says nothing about the need for a step change in the competence of large parts of the public sector to match today’s policy and legal standards and to perform in the information society. This morning he said that it will take 10 years to do even what he advocates…
