Usmanov freebie

At the risk of falling out with a lot of journalists at a particularly important time in political life, this story about the journos been flown out to Russia by Mr Usmanov should get a wider audience.

It certainly should…. But I think this is primarily an issue around sports desks – the “toy department” as it was known on my paper.
They are so used to having access to, say, Rooney, controlled by whoever is sponsoring him that it would not have seemed at all amiss to people who are used to being led by the nose.
One name should certainly have known better, though

Sports journalists don’t count.

Hm. Now why did you say ‘particularly’ and not ‘potentially’…?

Perhaps election speculation fever has taken a hold of me, but I took that as a hint.

:o )

The irony is that politicians have to declare every breath they take whereas journalists can keep it all secret, and yet they both have a big say in politics.

My brother in law specialises in Russian politics at Oxford. a regular topic of conversation is how ‘pro oligarch’ the British media is, The initial reaction to Litvienko’s murder being a good example.

Its standard practice to buy and Bribe Journalists in Russia so its not suprising that the same goes on here.Usamov’s problem is I think that he lacks the Subtlty of Berezovsky and Co who have a good understanding of how to play the British media.

Worth rememering also that a lot of Russian politics is still at a ‘system level’ ie ‘democracy’ is not automatically accepted as a good thing- Something like a 3rd of Russians regularly show support for ‘curtailing Democracy’
