Andrew Pierce writes touchingly about the legendary Ann Widdecombe. Apparently this “indomitable national institution” is considering retirement.
This would be disastrous for two reasons. Firstly, she is an excellent parliamentarian who, if Labour’s equally excellent candidate is unsuccessful at the next election, will continue to carry the respect of all sides of the House.
Secondly, if my informants are correct, Iain Dale has been telling friends that he is the favourite to win the selection to replace her. How can the world of blogging do without this full-time independent commentator?
UPDATE: Iain has denied the claim. And if Iain has categorically denied my assertion, that is good enough for me. I’m not sure if his comment below is saying that he is hoping to replace Ann or not, but I’m sure he would agree that she should be encouraged to remain a Conservative candidate at the next election.

I suspect that if Iain Dale did manage to wangle a seat and actually win it unlike last time then the blogging would continue but just at the expense of the taxpayer. Kind of ironic me thinks.
Tom, I’d ask you to remove, or at least reword that last paragraph. I have said no such thing, nor would I ever do so. To say anything like that is an obvious kiss of death and I haven’t done so to anyone at all – not even closest friends. Your allegation is deeply damaging.
Tom, thank you for adding the update. Iain
[...] Her expected loss is so severe that even Labour MP Tom Watson is sobbing over his pint. [...]
