Tricks of the trade

William Hill have opended a book on the outcome of the forthcoming Ealing-Southall by-election and have installed Labour’s Virendra Sharma as 4/7 favourite to win, with the Tories in second place and the Lib Dems in a close third.

There is an old Lib dem by-election trick that I am certain will be deployed by one or both of the opposition parties. They pile money on their candidate, see the odds drop, then put out a release to show “campaign momentum”. Given that the Tories and Lib Dems are slugging it out for the infamous by-election bandwagon, they might both be piling on the cash though. Could be very funny.

And if you don’t believe that they’re going for it – take a look at this piece on Grant Shapps from the Lib Dems in which they accuse Grant of pretending to be a Liberal Democrat. Cameron’s Conservatives. Don’t ya just love ‘em. :-)

Bit like the famous “Huhnie monster”, who kept backing Chris Huhne in the Lib Dem leadership election. No links to Chris Huhne whatsoever of course!

The LibDems may be ‘going for it’ but they seem to be well behind the eightball for once. Their candidate Nigel is a 4 time election loser who nobody outside the LibDem campaign office has heard of! There is hardly a mention of him on LibDem voice. Long may they keep focusing on their e-games rather than the real issues.

How much cash are Labour activists piling on in an attempt to stay ahead?
