Shocked of Ealing

I’ve just received a phone call, that if true, will mark the most remarkable culmination to one of the most incredible by-elections I have ever worked in.

Oh, don’t tease, let us in on it. Got to be another defection, hasn’t it?

What could get a Labour MP so interested in a seat that they hold at the moment with a 24% majority over the Lib Dems? Well, the most obvious answer would be that the main challenger does something to boost the Lab campaign. So that either means that the Lib Dem candidate has decided to defect to Labour (not unheard of as we saw in Newham North East in 1994) or that a candidate with no chance of being elected has defected. Well, given the strong position the Lib Dems were in 2005 (24% behind Labour) and the Lib Dem knack for winning by-elections from Labour in recent years (Brent East, Leicester South, Dunfermline and Fife West) I don’t think it’s that. That therefore leaves a candidate who might not win but at the same time it would have to be from a party with a chance of winning, so that rules out everyone bar the Conservatives. Which leads to the assumption that Mr. Lit has defected to Labour (which could in a way backfire as Conservative voters wouldn’t come out to vote) thus allowing the Lib Dems to state they are the only challengers. If he has, it could be a very high risk game Labour are playing in Southall.

Well Hurry up and tell us Tom old boy you have not got long the election is in around 15 hours……

Is it that there is more defections on the way? Some of the councillors on the Labour side seemed keen at the council meeting last night.

Was it that 3 female ministers came round for a cuppa at mine to hear the views of Muslim women this morning and that Gutto Hari and Sion Simon were both playing with Rafi my three year old? Have blogged it if so.
