If there is a good reason for this exemption, the explanation for it should be have been given to the HoC during the debate yesterday, and it didn’t emerge.
I’m not convinced that the motive is the concealment MPs expense details – there is nothing to stop MPs providing those details, and any refusing to do so under FOI exemption will be exposed by those who do. The unanswered question is what is the real motive and what lies behind it.

I have a few FOI issues of my own this week, and want to know why HM Customs & Revenues have this week removed from the public domain this official guidance paragraph claiming FOI exemption-

“Where possible we will remit part of the overpayment so that we only recover the true loss to the public purse.”

It coincides with the unacceptable conclusion of its internal policy review on overpayment recovery, which leaves tax credit claimants in need of the services of a barrister, if they seek justice from HMRC.

I think you Tory trolls should be asking why your lot didn’t show up on this one or voted with Mr Watson. Seems a bit pointless trying to kick a Labour man when the lot that are in your thrall have done SFA about this. What did your own MPs do on this one? Do they agree with the proposed law and duck voting for it? Are they off playing golf? Or getting bladdered with Guido?

Could you please explain why you voted yesterday for the bill to exempt members of the HoC and HoL from FOI legislation? It might be useful if you could clarify why you believe existing data protection rules are not sufficient to protect constituent correspondence.

The answer’s really simple. Tom voted for FOI not to apply to MP’s for the same reason he voted for Trident, tuition fees, foundation schools, the murderous attack on Iraq and locking people up for three months without charge. He always does exactly what he’s told to do by the government machine, even when they are telling him out of the corner of their mouths as they did on FOI yesterday.It’s called making a career in politics.

And if you think his loyalty to Blair has been obsequious, wait until you see him bringing back every stick Gordon throws for him to run after. If readers are looking for an independent MP with views of his own, I’m afraid you’ll have to look for someone other than the member for West Bromwich East.
